Well, that depends. If he’s going to continue to be a jerk probably not, and that’s appropriate.

However sometimes otherwise decent guys can act like real jerks for whatever reason. Call it temporary insanity if you want.

If they recognize their mistakes and make the necessary changes they may well deserve a second chance. However, depending on just how much of a jerk they were, that may not always be easy.

Here is some advice if you’re the jerk in question and you want to give it a go.

The first step is a little soul searching. Just what was your jerk-like behavior? Was it a one-time aberration or was it more an expression of a long-standing attitude?

Clearly, you need to be willing to change the jerk behavior. If it stems from deeply held attitudes or beliefs that may not be easy to do on your own.

Also, it can sometimes be hard to see your own behavior accurately. This is where a trusted friend with good judgment can help out. Friends may not always be comfortable telling a buddy when he’s being a jerk, but if you let them know that you really want honest feedback they’ll usually give you a straight answer.

Just be sure you don’t get upset with them if you don’t like what you hear.

Once you’ve gotten clear on the behavior and its origins, make an effective plan to change. Depending on your situation, this might even require help from a counselor.

This may not apply to you, but too many men take their romantic partner for granted, or treat her almost as if she’s property. Some have the mistaken belief that this demonstrates their masculinity. In fact, it does exactly the opposite.

A secure man treats women with dignity and respect.

This may seem quaint, but a little old-fashioned chivalry goes a long way these days.

Back in the 1960s many feminists considered acts of courtesy toward women another form of male chauvinism. These days women tend to be charmed by these simple acts of respect.

Practice what used to be everyday courtesy: open doors for women, pull out their chair for them many with them at a restaurant, help them on with their coats and so forth.

Do this for all women. You want it to become a habit.

Since you've already admitted you behave like a jerk in the past, you're going to have to convince your woman that you've changed. Words alone won't do this. As the saying goes "words are cheap". You're going to have to prove your sincerity by your actions.

See if you can think of any specific actions you can take that will prove that you've really changed.
