Long Term Relationship Help

Magic of Making UpWe all need a little help from time to time. This sure is true in committed relationships.

There’s no shame in looking for some long term relationship help.

Some people think they should be able to handle their relationship issues on their own. But few people have the experience necessary to deal with every situation that real-life relationships might encounter.

Rather than being a sign of weakness, looking for help and guidance is a sign of maturity and commitment.

It means they want the relationship to succeed and they’re willing to move beyond their comfort zone to make it happen.

I think it’s a good idea to gather information from several sources, but in the end it's important that you trust your gut instincts.

After all, you’re in the best position to know what’s appropriate for you.

Long-Term Relationships Are Worth the Effort

One point to keep in mind is that no matter how you slice it any long term relationship will require work and commitment. It seems that all worthwhile things are.

Some people have the naïve expectation that their relationship will never have any difficulties.

That’s unrealistic to say the least.

Unfortunately someone with that expectation may abandon a previously successful relationship when it runs into difficulty because they think trouble means the relationship is fatally flawed.

Nothing could be farther from the truth

Individuals involved in a relationship need to work through their issues as they grow together. It won’t always be easy. However, when they do their be closer as result.

Remember to Look for the Good

One issue that comes up is that the more time you spend with a person the more likely you are to see their weaknesses as well as their good aspects.

So don’t be surprised if you find yourself struggling to understand and accept the person you were once head-over-heels in love with. It’s normal.

The good part is that a loving couple that come through a difficult time successfully have an even stronger foundation to continue to build on

Part of the answer to a problem is being committed to making the relationship work. Chances of solving a problem skyrocket if both partners are determined to stay together.

Learn from Others but Be Careful about the Source

Also keep in mind that you're not the first person to face a challenge in a relationship.

Yes it's true that every relationship is unique. But human nature is consistent and there are common themes. It is possible to learn from others' experience.

But it's crucial that you're very, very careful about the sources you use.

Although it’s good to be able to confide with friends about issues you’re facing in your relationship be cautious about developing the habit of complaining about your partner every time you’re with your friends.

No one is perfect but no one is all bad either. However the more you focus on the negative the more you’ll shape your habits of thought in that direction.

You may have friends that tend to be negative about everything.

Others may have had a bad experience in their relationships and now are sour on everybody’s relationship. These folks probably aren’t the best people to talk about your relationship with.

There’s another problem with talking to your friends. It’s the rare person who really knows what they’re talking about when it comes to relationships. Most pass on their own misconceptions and errors.

So by all means confide in your friends and take comfort in their friendship but when you're trying to decide what to actually do look for more reliable advice.

On this website I have referenced several sources of excellent relationship advice. One of my favorites remains The Magic of Making Up.
